Antique Singing & Percussive Bowl. Notes F#3 & B4 (Heart & Crown Chakras)

Weight 1.08 kilos (2 lb 6 oz). Size 22.5 x 5.5 cm (8 ¾ x 2 ¼ inches)

This very rare and extraordinary antique bowl is difficult to categorize as it could easily serve several entirely different purposes.

Its general shape is of a type used by shamans; its low wall and flat bottom making it ideal for interpreting vibrant rice patterns, egg yolks and entrails, as well as the preparation of herbal medicines. It could also serve as a vessel for ceremonial mandalas.

On the other hand it might simply be an unusual singing bowl as it has a fabulous singing voice. The fundamental note is a solemn and slightly muted perfect pitch third octave F#3 (186Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  However, when played with a wooden ringer the note becomes an incredibly powerful and penetrating middle octave B4 (507Hz).

Finally, it is evident that the central depression underneath has been repeatedly struck with something hard (see main photo)…strongly suggesting that this bowl has played a percussive role of some kind.  Also the raised mound at its centre is shiny compared to the surrounding patina, and might also have been struck with a padded drumstick.

Maybe it has served all three roles…shamanic divination, singing, and percussion!

This fascinating antique bowl dates from the 18th Century and is relatively thick and heavy for its size.  It has a low splayed wall, a flat bottom with an unusual raised mound at its centre, and a folded and sheered ‘pie-crust’ rim with an outward-sloping lip.  There are no decorative features, but there is evidence of some magical or ritual gashes at intervals around the outer wall.  It is in excellent structural condition, clean and stain-free, with a rich golden bronze colour.

A padded striker and a ringer are included in the price.
