Antique Singing Bowl. Notes A4 & E3 (Third Eye and Solar Plexus Chakras)

Weight 1.07 kilos (2 lb 9 oz). Size 22 x 6 cm (8 ½ x 2 ¼ inches)

This very rare and extraordinary antique bowl is difficult to categorize as it could easily serve several entirely different purposes.

Its general shape is of a type used by shamans; its low wall and flat bottom making it ideal for interpreting vibrant rice patterns, egg yolks and entrails, as well as the preparation of herbal medicines. It could also serve as a vessel for ceremonial mandalas.

On the other hand it might simply be an unusual singing bowl as it has a very interesting singing voice. The fundamental note fluctuates between a middle octave A4 (432Hz) and a perfect pitch third octave E3 (165Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  However, when played with a wooden ringer the note becomes F5 (679Hz).

Finally, it is evident that the central depression underneath has been repeatedly struck with something hard.  This might simply have been how the mound was formed, but it might also have been struck as a percussive instrument.

Maybe it has served all three roles…shamanic divination, singing, and percussion!

This fascinating antique bowl dates from the 18th Century and is relatively thick and heavy for its size.  It has a low splayed wall, a flat bottom with an unusual raised mound at its centre, and a slightly outward-sloping lip.  The exterior wall was once decorated with four incised bands at intervals, but these have been largely worn down from use over time.

This bowl is quite thick and there is evidence of accidental inclusions in the molten alloy which manifest as small blotches on the outer wall. They bear witness to the basic conditions under which it was forged.   It is in excellent structural condition, clean and virtually stain-free, with a rich patina and a matt bronze colour.

A padded striker and a ringer are included in the price.
