£745.00
Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: E3 & Bb4 (Solar Plexus & Crown Chakras)
Weight: 739 grams (1 lb 10 oz). Size: 18 x 9 cm ( 7 x 3 ½ inches)
This fine-wall antique Lingam Singing Bowl could easily be mistaken for an antique Thadobati bowl were it not for the superb pointed lingam at its centre. It even has a band of ritual gashes around the outer wall that is fairly common on older Thadobati bowls, but extremely rare on a Lingam. So this bowl is something of a hybrid.
I believe the ritual gashes have a magical function that relates in some way to a bowl’s initiation. They typically appear in seemingly random groups of 3, 4 or 5 around the outer rim, but in this case they follow a roughly linear course.
It’s a very old bowl, perhaps 18th century, that has seen a lot of use to judge by the thinness of its walls which have been worn down through years of handling and use. It has a gently curved wall, a plain sheered lip, and a flattish bottom. The lingam at its centre is surrounded by circles, and there is a matching navel or yoni underneath.
The fundamental note is a rather rare third octave E3 (168Hz) when struck with a padded mallet. When played around the rim with a suede ringer the E3 builds to a middle octave Bb4 (478Hz) if desired, the same harmonic when played with a wooden ringer.
This interesting and characterful antique lingam bowl is structurally sound, free of stains and blemishes, and relatively light for its size. It has the look and feel of antiquity.
A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included in the price.
