This rare antique Lingam Singing Bowl, circa 1800, has unusually thick walls and is quite heavy for its size. It takes the Thadobati form and is gently curved with a plain sheered lip and a slightly rounded bottom. The bold lingam at its centre is surrounded and defined by two multiple sets of circles, and there is a deep matching navel or yoni underneath.
Its walls have been refined and worn sensually smooth over the years and any decorative features it might have had around the outer rim have been worn away with the passage of time. However, there is evidence of the magical gashes that once encircled the outer wall, which I believe formed part of the bowl’s initiation ritual.
The fundamental note is a sublime third octave A3 (223Hz) that is quite close to perfect pitch when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede or wooden ringer. The rim note changes to a nice fifth octave E5 (564Hz) with a wooden ringer. It is very responsive and easy to play.
This old bowl has considerable aesthetic appeal with its smooth walls and attractive aged patina. It is structurally sound, clean, and free of stains.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
