Large Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl – Eb3 & A5

Antique Manipuri Singing Bowls have become increasingly rare in recent years, and this is a particularly nice example.  With a diameter of 8 ½ inches it is considerably larger and older than most.

Its shallow walls have been worn silky smooth with years of service and cleaning, and some of its decorative features have been worn away, including the circles at its centre and the some of the bands encircling the outer rim. 

The fundamental note is a nice close to perfect pitch third octave Eb3 (132-135Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note will readily progress to a middle A4 (449Hz) if desired, and it changes to A5 (858Hz) with a wooden ringer.

This large 19th Century Manipuri Singing Bowl is in excellent structural condition, clean and stain-free, with a bright golden bronze colour.
