Large Antique Thadobati Singing Bowl – E3/F3 Cusp & Long Sustain

SOLD

Antique Thadobati Singing Bowl.  Notes: E3/F3 (Solar Plexus & Heart Chakras)
Weight 1.39 kilos (3 lb 1 oz).   Size 21 x 11 cm (8 ¼ x 4 ¼ nches)

This exceptionally large and heavy antique Thadobati Singing Bowl is thought to date from the early 1800s. Its fundamental note falls midway between the third octave E3 and F3 (168Hz – 170Hz) and imperceptibly flickers between the two notes when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede or wooden ringer.  It is a responsive bowl and easy to play. The struck note is particularly nice, rather bell-like, with a long sustain.

The external surface of its high-sided and gently curved wall has been crafted to contrast a smooth band close to the rim with a lightly hammered surface below.  It has a sheered lip with a border of tiny decorative cuts encircling the rim, and there are circles at its centre.

The structural condition of this antique bowl is excellent, and it is clean and free of stains.  However, at some point in its long life it was left tilted with liquid inside and this has resulted in a patch of copper oxidization across the bowl’s floor.  It is merely a cosmetic issue that has no discernable impact on the sound quality, but I have reduced the price accordingly.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
