Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: C#3, G#4, A6, C#4, Eb6

Weight: 1.37 kilos (3 lb 0 oz).  Size: 22.5 x 9.5 cm (8 ¾ x 3 ¾ inches)

This interesting 18th century hybrid Lingam Singing Bowl has an unusual Jambati-like form with fine sloping walls, sheered lip, and flat bottom, but with a lingam inside and a naval underneath.   The large lingam at its centre is surrounded and defined by two sets of circles, and there are several decorative lines, now faint and partially worn, encircling the outer rim.  The walls are smooth and slightly irregular, due in part, I believe, to a series of magical or ritual gashes that have been worn away but left their impression on the surface.

This bowl is exceptionally multi-harmonic.  The fundamental note is a third octave C#3 (141Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a middle octave G#4 (408Hz) with a wooden ringer.  However, multiple other harmonics are present including A6 (1788Hz), perfect pitch C#4 (277Hz), and a near perfect pitch Eb6 (1243Hz).

This very old bowl has the look and feel of great antiquity.  There are minor signs of wear and tear in places, and some light staining, but it is structurally sound and basically clean.

A fabulous and very rare multi-harmonic lingam singing bowl!

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, and a padded striker are included in the price.
