Rare 19th Century Lingam Singing Bowl with 2 Inscriptions!

£650.00

Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: A3 & E5 (Third Eye & Solar Plexus Chakras)

Weight 792 grams (1 lb 12 oz). Size 17.5 x 9 cm (6 ¾ x 3 ½ inches)

This lovely antique Lingam Singing Bowl dates from the 19th century.  The fundamental note is an excellent third octave A3 (224Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a nice fifth octave E5 (644Hz) harmonic with a wooden ringer.  This bowl is very responsive and easy to play.

Lingam singing bowls are rarely inscribed unless particularly large, so this bowl is rather special in having, not one, but two dot-punched inscriptions on its outer wall.  It would appear that they were inscribed at different times, one being older than the other.  The larger of the two has a lotus at either end.   Inscriptions are a sure sign of the high esteem in which a bowl was held by a former keeper.  They always add interest and value.

This lingam bowl has been well crafted.  It has high-sided walls, a plain sheered lip, and a flat bottom.   The large lingam at its centre is surrounded and defined by two sets of circles, and there is a deep matching navel or yoni underneath.  The walls are smooth from long use and the decorative band of dots around the outer rim have mostly been worn away with the passage of time.  There is evidence of magical or ritual gashes that once encircled the outer wall below the rim, now reduced to subtle surface variations.

It is in excellent structural condition, and particularly clean and free of stains and blemishes, and having an attractive golden colour.

A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included free of charge.
