Rare Antique Lingam Singing Bowl – 1800s – G#3

£600.00

Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: G#3 & C#5 (Throat & Root Chakras)

Weight: 748 grams (1 lb 10 oz).   Size: 17 x 8.5 cm (6 ¾ x 3 ¼ inches)

This medium size antique Lingam Singing Bowl, circa 1800, has the Thadobati form with a fairly straight wall, a plain sheered lip and a flat bottom.  The lingam at its centre is surrounded and defined by two sets of circles, and there is a matching navel or yoni underneath.  Its walls have been refined and worn sensually smooth over the years and little remains of the decorative band of dots encircling the outer rim.  However, there is evidence of the magical gashes that once encircled the outer wall, which I believe formed part of the bowl’s initiation ritual.

The fundamental note is a nice third octave G#3 (204Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede or wooden ringer. The rim note changes to a fifth octave C#5 (564Hz) with a wooden ringer.  It is very responsive and easy to play.

This old bowl has considerable aesthetic appeal with its smooth walls and attractive aged patina.  It is structurally sound, clean, and free of stains.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
