Antique Divination Bowl. Notes: A3 & Eb5 (Third Eye & Solar Plexus Chakras)
Weight 1.05 kilos (2 lb 5 oz). Size 21.5 x 4.5 cm (8 ½ x 1 ¾ inches)
This is a rare shaman divination bowl dating from the 19th Century, possibly earlier. Its shape is typical of a type of bowl used by shamans; its low wall and wide flat bottom making it ideal for interpreting vibrant rice patterns, egg yolks and entrails, as well as the preparation of herbal medicines. It could also serve as a vessel for ceremonial mandalas, and even as a percussive instrument as well as a singing bowl.
The struck note is a third octave A3 (224Hz) with a short sustain when struck with a padded mallet. The rim note builds to a rather nice fifth octave Eb5 (620Hz) when played with a wooden ringer. However, it could also serve a percussive drum-like role when struck at its centre or underneath. Indeed, it is likely it was struck at the start of the divination process to distribute the grains of rice for interpretation.
This bowl is very shallow, with a low curved wall, a wide flat floor, and a sheered lip. At its centre it features the engraved geometric sacred flower (or germ) of life symbol.
This divination bowl is in excellent structural condition, clean, with a bright golden bronze colour. It has the look and feel of purpose and antiquity.
A ringer is included in the price.
