Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: Bb3 & E5 (Crown & Solar Plexus Chakras)
Weight: 1.41 kilos (3 lb 2 oz). Size: 22 x 10 cm (8 x 4 inches)
This rare 19th Century Lingam Singing Bowl has extra-thick walls and would have been quite costly and a challenge to forge. It is beautifully proportioned and has gently curved walls and a plain sheered lip with a band of tiny decorative cuts encircling the outer rim. There is a neat Lingam at its centre surrounded and defined by circles.
There is a boldly engraved inscription on the outer wall which is thought to be in an old Farsi language. It is believed to read ‘Taliban’ (a name, not the Islamic fundamentalist group). Inscriptions are a sure sign of the high esteem in which a bowl was held by a former keeper. They often refer to the commissioning owner or benefactor.
This antique singing bowl has a near perfect pitch third octave Bb3 fundamental (232Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to an E5 (662Hz) harmonic when played with a wooden ringer. It is the perfect size for holding and playing, and its extra weight prevents it from spinning in the hand.
It is structurally sound, clean and stain-free, with an attractive antique golden bronze colour and aged patina.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and ringer are included in the price.
