Rare Heavy 19th Century G#3 Lingam Singing Bowl with Inscription

£1,250.00

Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Note: G#3 (Throat Chakra)

Weight 1.32 kilos (2 lb 14 ¾ oz).  Size 21.5 x 10 cm (8 ½ x 4 inches)

This large antique Lingam Singing Bowl has thicker than average walls and is heavy for its size. It takes the Thadobati form with gently curved high-sided walls and a flattish bottom, and a sheered lip with tiny decorative gashes around the outer rim.   At its centre is a pointed lingam surrounded by circles, matched by a deep navel or yoni underneath.  It also benefits from an inscription on the outer wall; a sure indication of the importance and high esteem in which this bowl was held by a former keeper.

The fundamental note is a nice third octave G#3 (202Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to fifth octave D5 (588Hz) and a high sixth octave C#6 (1099Hz) with a wooden ringer.

It is believed to date from the early 19th Century, possibly earlier, and is in excellent structural condition, free of stains and blemishes, with a fabulous bronze colour and aged patina.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion, a small padded striker, and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.

Antique Lingam Singing Bowls are sacred musical vessels and the rarest and most sought-after of all Himalayan bowls. They typically have diameters of between 5 and 7 inches (23 to 28 cm) and very rarely does one of this size come to light.
