Rare Large & Heavy Antique Manipuri-Lingam Singing Bowl with Perfect Pitch G3
£1,500.00
Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: G3 & C#5 (Throat & Root Chakras)
Weight 1.32 kilos (2lb 14 oz). Size 24 x 8.5 cm (9 ½ x 3 ¼ inches)
This is a fabulous example of a superior quality antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Apart from being a very rare Manipuri-Lingam hybrid it has 3 outstanding features…its heavy weight, unusually large 9 ½ inch diameter, and a perfect pitch G3 voice. Lingam and Manipuri bowls seldom have diameters above 8 inches, making this bowl a rare exception.
The fundamental note is a lovely spot-on perfect pitch third octave G3 (196Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. The rim note changes to a fifth octave C#5 (563Hz) with a wooden ringer. It is a very responsive bowl and easy to play.
This antique bowl has all the physical characteristics of a normal Manipuri with its shallow and low profile and multiple lines around the outer rim. But it is further distinguished by an extra-wide grooved lip and the extremely rare addition of a fabulous lingam surrounded and defined by 2 sets of circles at its center. There is a matching navel or yoni underneath.
This bowl is thought to date from the 18th century and looks its age. It is structurally sound but has patches of copper oxidization and a heavy patina acquired over the years. The patina could be removed with a little effort if one preferred a cleaner looking bowl.
This rare bowl looks ancient and feels special.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a ringer are included in the price.
