Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: E3 & G#5 (Solar Plexus & Throat Chakras)
Weight 824 grams (1 lb 13 oz). Size 18.5. x 9.5 cm (7 ¼ x 3 ¾ inches)
This fine-walled antique Lingam Singing Bowl takes the high-sided flat-bottomed Thadobati form, and is relatively light for its size.
It has a plain sheered lip and the outer rim is decorated with tiny diagonal lines. A number of lines encircle the outer wall at intervals, including the mid-point. There is a large lingam surrounded by circles at its center, with a matching navel or yoni underneath that is still partially filled in following a former safekeeping ceremony, probably to ensure that a pregnancy went full term.
The fundamental note is a close to perfect pitch third octave E3 (162-165Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. An A4 (452-455Hz) harmonic can also be brought out with practice. The rim note changes to a fifth octave G#5 (842Hz) with a wooden ringer. It’s a responsive bowl and easy to play.
This old bowl dates from the 19th century and is in excellent structural condition, clean and free of stains, but with an aged patina and an external wall that shows clear evidence of a rich ritual life in the past.
An interesting and characterful Antique Lingam Singing Bowl!
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
