Possibly The Rarest Antique Lingam Singing Bowl in the World!
Unique Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Notes: A3 & D5 & C#6 (Third Eye Chakra)
Weight: 1.61 kilos (3 lb 9 oz). Size: 26 x 13.5 cm (10 ¼ x 5 ¼ inches)
This is an incredible singing bowl – utterly unique and exceptional in every respect, and certainly one of the rarest antique Lingams in the world! In 45 years of collecting antique bowls in the Himalayas I have never encountered a singing bowl with this extraordinary conical shape, let alone a lingam! Furthermore, it has a fabulous self-amplifying and multi-harmonic voice with a spot-on perfect pitch A3 fundamental!
This is a large and superior quality bowl with a diameter of 10 ¼ inches at its widest tapering down to a diameter of 4 ¼ inches at the base. It has a pronounced bulge forming a collar around the rim, with a slightly flared sheered lip. There are decorative lines encircling the upper bulge and a series of magical or ritual marks on the lower. The conical lower part of the bowl is plain on the exterior wall.
There is a large lingam surrounded by circles at its centre, with multiple sets of lines encircling the inside wall at intervals. I have never seen this feature in any other bowl.
This bowl has an original and beautiful multi-harmonic voice, no doubt due to its unusual shape. The fundamental note is a spot-on perfect pitch third octave A3 (220Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer. However, there are other subtle harmonics present including a fifth octave D5 (604Hz) and a sixth octave C#6 (1081Hz). Both struck and played notes appear to amplify. The beautiful struck A3 note ranks among the very best I have heard!
This bowl is in exceptional museum quality condition, completely free of stains and blemishes. It has an extraordinarily beautiful surface and colour…a rich golden bronze with an aged patina.
To summarize, this bowl is unique and special in so many ways. Its size and quality leaves me in no doubt that it was commissioned to serve a particular and important purpose, and might well have been made for ceremonial temple or monastery use. It is a struggle for me to part with at any price.
If you are looking for a unique antique bowl with an incredible voice…this is it!
A padded striker and a double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
