Wonderful 18th Century Remuna-Lingam Supplied as Found – Exact Perfect Pitch G#3

This is a really rare and lovely 18th century hybrid Remuna-Lingam singing bowl with an exceptional exact perfect pitch third octave G#3 (708Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a very nice fifth octave Eb5 (712Hz) when played with a wooden ringer. This bowl is very responsive and easy to play.

Lingam bowls have a very distinctive sound, and Remuna bowls are renowned for their beautiful voices and ease of play, and this lovely bowl combines the best of both worlds.  This bowl has the body and sonic characteristics of a Remuna bowl with its fine globular wall, grooved lip, and decorative bands around the rim and belly…but with the addition of a lingam surrounded by circles at its centre, and a matching navel or yoni underneath.  However, much of its decorative artwork has been worn away from use over time, leaving its hammered surface silky smooth.

A sprinkling of inclusions on the bottom add interest.  Inclusions are small specs of dust or grit that have accidentally been included in the molten alloy during the forging process.  They manifest as tiny pimples on its surface, and are evidence of the primitive conditions in which this bowl was made.

This fabulous ancient bowl is a personal favorite.  It is supplied exactly as found, with the patina and grime of antiquity.  It is structurally sound with a faint smattering of copper oxide inside.  The rich patina of this bowl is evidence of its great age and usage, and to remove it would be to destroy its look and feel of antiquity.
