A Very Rare 18th Century Shaman Divination Bowl

This is a very rare 18th century Shaman Divination Bowl; a sacred ritual object that will have accompanied the shaman throughout their lifetime.

Its low wall and flat bottom are typical of a type of bowl used by shamans for interpreting vibrant rice patterns, egg yolks and entrails, as well as the preparation of herbal medicines.  It could also serve as a vessel for a ceremonial mandala.

The struck and played note is a middle octave C#4 (284Hz) with a hard ringer.  However, strictly speaking this is a shamanic tool and not a singing bowl, although its vibrant sonic aspect might be employed to scatter grains of rice for interpretation etc.

This divination bowl is structurally sound and free of stains.  The black marks around the rim suggest that the outer wall was originally painted.   It has  an aged patina and the look and feel of great antiquity.
