Antique Lingam Singing Bowl. Note: Eb4 (Solar Plexus Chakra)
Weight: 1.25 kilos (2 lb 12 oz). Size: 19 x 9.5 cm (7 ½ x 3 ¾ inches)
Trapezoid-shaped antique singing bowls are extremely rare, and even more so if they are Lingams like this. They may differ in size but always feature the same flanged lip with multiple decorative lines encircling most of the outer wall, and a flat bottom. This bowl has a diameter of 7 ½ inches and is the largest I have seen.
It is also the first Trapezoid Lingam I have encountered. There is a rounded lingam surrounded and defined by two sets of circles at its centre, with a matching navel or yoni underneath.
This bowl was sourced in India and benefits from an engraved inscription, possibly in Hindi, below the decorative circles on the outer wall. Inscriptions are a sign of the high esteem, or importance, in which a bowl was held by a former keeper. They always add interest and value. This is the only inscribed trapezoid bowl I have come across.
I believe this bowl dates from the 19th century and is meant to be struck rather than played. It is slightly self-amplifying and the struck note is particularly satisfying and powerful. The fundamental note is a middle octave Eb4 (319Hz) when struck or played around the rim with a hard ringer. The Eb4 note is accompanied by a subtle fifth octave G#5 (848Hz) harmonic.
It is in good structural condition, clean and free of stains and blemishes, with a matt bronze colour and nicely aged patina.
A unique and attractive antique Lingam bowl with a powerful voice!
A complementary Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a ringer are included in the price.
