Antique Resting Bell/Singing Bowl – C4 (Root Chakra)
Weight 988 grams (2 lb 3 oz): Size 18.5 x 6.5 cm (7 ¼ x 2 ½ inches)
Antique Singing Bowls are sometimes described as Resting Bells…bells without clappers that rest upside down on a surface and are struck with a mallet. This description applies most appropriately to bowls that are basically bell-shaped and produce a bell-like sound, as this rare example does.
The fundamental note is a bell-like middle C4 (264Hz) with a nice sustain when struck. It will, with practice, play around the rim but I suspect it was intended to be held on the palm of the hand and struck.
This rare resting bell has been cast and hand-finished rather than being forged like most singing bowls. It has a lovely shallow bell-like form and has been beautifully crafted with thick walls that make it heavy for its size. The thick downward sloping lip is lightly grooved. There is a single circle at its centre and multiple decorative bands encircling the inner rim. There is a single band halfway down the inside wall, and another around the outside.
This rare antique bell/bowl is in excellent structural condition and has an attractive aged patina.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a double ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.
