Rare Unique, Thick and Heavy Antique Ultabati-Lingam Singing Bowl – C#4

£910.00

Antique Ultabati-Lingam Singing Bowl.  Notes: C#4 & G#5 (Root & Throat Chakras)

Weight: 943 grams (2 lb 1 oz).  Size: 20 x 6.5 cm (7 ¾ x 2 ½ inches)

This very unusual and interesting antique Lingam Singing Bowl looks very like a flattened Untabati with its downward-sloping lip and pronounced shoulder.  Uniquely, there are multiple lines encircling the inner rim, most of which contain tiny decorative cuts.  I have never seen this on any other bowl.

Furthermore a series of magical ritual marks encircle the bowl at its shoulder and also, uniquely, inside and underneath.  At its centre there is a large lingam surrounded by circles, and a deep navel underneath.

This bowl is very special and in all probability served some important ceremonial or ritual purpose.

The fundamental note is a nice middle octave C#4 (280Hz) when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer.  The rim note changes to a fifth octave G#5 (828Hz) with a wooden ringer.

This unique lingam bowl is thought to date from the 18th or early 19th century.  It has been well forged and is thicker and heavier than one might expect for its size.  It is in excellent structural condition.  The only cosmetic issue being a barely noticeable aged repair to a tiny split or chip on the inner rim, well away from the playing edge.  I only discovered it on close examination for this listing, and have reduced the price a little accordingly.

This unique bowl has the feel of special sacred purpose and the look of great antiquity.

A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a ringer are included free of charge.
