Antique Divination Bowl. Notes: B, Bb, E, F and More
Weight 592 grams (1 lb 5 oz). Size 21 x 4 cm (8 ¼ x 1 ½ inches)
This is an extremely rare shaman divination bowl dating from the 18th Century, possibly earlier. Its shape is typical of a type of bowl used by shamans; its low wall and flat bottom making it ideal for interpreting vibrant rice patterns, egg yolks and entrails, as well as the preparation of herbal medicines. It could also serve as a vessel for ceremonial mandalas.
It’s difficult to determine its fundamental note as each strike with the padded mallet brings forth a different note…including B, E and F. It is best struck underneath rather than against the side. However, when played around the rim with a wooden ringer it produces a piercing and pulsating fifth octave Bb5 (920Hz). Perhaps the vibrant and multi-harmonic nature of this bowl influences the divination process in some way, especially when working with seeds and grains of rice.
This bowl has a low and beautifully curved wall, a wide flat floor, and a sheered lip. Inside there are two circles some distance apart, which I feel are fields into which seeds or grains enter for interpretation, rather than being decorative features.
It is in excellent structural condition, with the look and feel of shamanic purpose and great antiquity.
Rare and magical!
A padded striker and a ringer are included in the price.
