Antique Thadobati Singing Bowl. Notes: E3 & Bb4 (Solar Plexus & Crown Chakras)
Weight: 741 grams (1 lb 10 oz). Size: 18 x 9 cm (7 x 3 ½ inches)
This antique Thadobati Singing Bowl is so old that its walls have been worn thin and silky smooth through years of handling and ritual washing, and ALL of its former decorative features (circles at the centre and lines around the rim etc.) have vanished completely with the passage of time. This type of wear is not necessarily to its detriment as it often refines the sound and lightens the weight, making it easier to hold and play for an extended period.
However, the irregular band of magical or ritual gashes (cuts) that encircle the outer wall, being deeper than other decorative features, are still in evidence. They only appear on older bowls, and are thought to relate to the bowl’s initiation.
The fundamental note flickers between Eb3 and E3 at around 160Hz when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a suede ringer, which will also develop into a Bb4 (458Hz) if required. The rim note changes to a fifth octave A5 (874Hz) with a wooden ringer.
This 19th Century bowl is in excellent structural condition despite the long use and wear. It is also clean and stain-free, with an attractive brassy golden bronze colour.
A characterful old bowl with a nice voice and a silky-smooth surface reflecting long service.
A Tibetan silk brocade bowl cushion and a ringer are included in the price.
