Very Rare 18th Century Shaman Divination Bowl

£620.00

Shaman Divination Bowl. Notes: Eb4, G4 & A5

Weight 597 grams (1 lb 5 oz).  Size 18 x 4 cm (7 x 1 ½ inches)

This is an extremely rare shaman divination bowl dating from the 18th Century, possibly earlier.  Its low wall and flat bottom are typical of a type of bowl used by shamans for interpreting vibrant rice patterns, egg yolks and entrails, as well as the preparation of herbal medicines.  It could also serve as a vessel for ceremonial mandalas.

When beaten drum-like on the rim with a padded mallet it produces a middle octave Eb4 (309Hz) and in the centre the note changes to a G4 (401Hz).  The played note is a fifth octave A5 (898Hz) with a wooden ringer.  However, its primary function is not musical.

Strictly speaking this is a shamanic vessel or tool, and not a singing bowl, and as such it is as perfect an example as one would wish to find!

This divination bowl is structurally sound and free of stains.  It has an incredibly beautiful aged patina and the look and feel of shamanic purpose and great antiquity.

A really rare and special find!  Magical!
