Topeng Sad Face

An unusual vintage topeng mask, circa 1988 (20 x 15 cm). Carved in Pule Wood and painted with natural pigments , it features human hair on the head and monkey fur eyebrows and mustache.

I cannot be certain but it was probably carved by the late famous dancer and carver Made Regug from whom I bought and commissioned a number of masks in the late 1980s. Stylistically it is typical of his work. The word Qitambaik is printed in ballpoint pen on the back. A fabulous and rare mask in excellent condition, and very collectable.
