Tibetan Antique Bronze Crowned Meditation Buddha Statue
Weight: 2.86 kilos (6 lb 5 oz). Size: H29 x W22 x D15 cm (11 ½ x 8 ¾ x 6 inches)
This rare bronze crowned Buddha statue is from my own personal collection, and is thought to date from the 18th or 9th century, but could possibly be earlier.
The head with its five-leaf crown depicting the five Buddhas, each showing a different mudra, is particularly interesting. The facial features of the five crown Buddhas have all been worn smooth with countless years of ritual touching by devotees. His hands are in the Mudra of meditation and his robes are finely decorated.
This graceful antique statue has been cast in bronze and is in excellent structural condition with a weathered patina.
Most Buddha statues depict the deity seated on a lotus, but this one finishes at the bottom of the robe. This, along with its weathered patina, suggests it was originally part of a larger display on an outdoor temple shrine. This notion is supported by the presence of rust on the tin plate that seals the bottom of the statue. The aged patina could be removed by cleaning if desired but I prefer to leave its history intact.
