A Charming Pair of Carved Stone Guardian Figures

A charming pair of seated guardian figures hand-carved from mottled and striped natural sandstone.  They were sourced from a private museum in Bali, Indonesia, in the early 1990s.  The museum acquired them from an itinerate Indonesian craft-seller from Java.

The larger of the two seated figures rests arms on knees with his head in his hands. He looks blissfully happy and relaxed.

The smaller figure has a topknot and rests his head on his knees while gripping his ankles with both hands.  By contrast he looks a little sad or bored.

There is a faint hairline crack in the lower back of the larger figure which is stable and only noticeable on close inspection.   The smaller carving is perfect.

Both stone carvings are full of character, expressive, and hugely charming!
